Social justice hackathons and social enterprise development projects offer novel ways to invigorate, reimagine, and redefine diversity, equity, inclusion, identity, and belonging (DEIIB) work in schools through empathic design thinking and social entrepreneurship. Social justice hackathons are innovation events where participants come together to think deeply and differently about a particular social problem in a community of color. In this workshop, participants will take part in a mini-hackathon and (1) get a plan for applying design thinking to the development of DEIB experiences in innovation and social justice, (2) explore the intersection between authentic forms of student engagement and innovative classroom practice, and (3) develop templates for applying student creativity in the service of DEIIB work.
