Apps such as ChatGPT and DALL-E call into question which tasks previously done by people will now be done by machines—or by machines working in partnership with people. For the latter, human workers can be deskilled in their job roles or can upskill to complement what AI can do, enabling more effective performance than either humans or AI can do alone (intelligence augmentation: IA). In this workshop, we will discuss three areas in which IA may reshape human occupational skills in the next decade:

  • AI-based “what if” modeling that improves some types of human decisions
  • Higher accomplishments in human creation of innovative artifacts
  • Improved negotiation, collaboration, and empathy in the workplace
